Right Before Setting Sail

When you went to work for the first job or you decided to create your own firm, what was in and on your mind? Here are some others’ opinion for you.

We have met people of numerous personalities and capabilities. Occasionally they would know more than they would actually reveal in front of me. Some, I would say were paradigmatic types, who devoted time and money for public affairs. Some, were cunning look like gentlemen but possessed complicated minds and some look very awkward when they spoke out but were honest people who could be trusted. Many have left impressions in my memory, they have all taught me so much not only regarding the design business but also in my personal life.

The proliferation of social media has changed the way we know the world. It has open our eyes but reduced our depth of knowledge. Truth and falsehoods mingle so much they jeopardize our judgement. In our contemporary world, marketing and branding are two main issues thought to lead to success.

As I come across the topic” The Path to Success-some reminders for the next generations” in a Taiwan magazine provided glimpses into the design business as middle generation designers share their early stages at the time when they first started their own firms.

Mr XXX believes that the key to success is charisma and treating fairly all clients and partners without deception.

Mr YYY said that one should avoid lavishness but rather polish your professional skills to help your clients.

Mr ZZZ pointed out that one needs to have a sincere mind before talking about “marketing”.

Mr AAA pinpoints that the key aspects of a good designer is taste and cultural knowledge.

Mr BBB says that one must insist on finding his or her own advantage and develop into a personal signature.

Mr CCC believes that the only one thing true to a designer’s mind is not marketing nor management skills but the nature of a designer’s sensibility which appears without a veil in his or her works.

My question to those who are about to establish their own firms is what do you want, besides chasing glory, fame and fortune? What are your thoughts before you set up your own firm?
